SOG Aegis AE-06 Folding Knife
The SOG Aegis is an excellent “every day carry” blade. My mission was to find a new, outstanding EDC full-size folder that was not going to exhaust my financial resources. The Aegis has exceeded my expectations in every way. I first want to comment on mobility. The Aegis disappears in the pocket even while wearing business attire dress slacks. Throughout the day I would find myself checking to make sure it was still on me. I would even check while I was sitting down, when my slacks seem to compress more in the pocket area. This full-size folder is light-weight, weighing in at approximately 3.1 oz. From the outside of the pocket, all that is visible is the pocket clip. It does a great job with concealing the folder. SOG uses a bayonet reversible clip that sits high on the handle, therefore giving you deep concealment. Its cool “SOG” black chrome-looking logo design is also esthetically pleasing.
The 3.5 inch AUS 8 TiNi coated blade has performed impressively. I really like its flat ground shape and amount of belly. It slices very well and has good edge retention. In my opinion, the 3.5 inch blade would also serve well in a defensive role. One-handed opening is achieved effortlessly due to its high tension coil springs and well placed thumb stud. Upon initiating the opening action, the blade is propelled out. The deployment is very fast and addictive. I found myself volunteering the use of my knife throughout the day just to give me an excuse to deploy the blade. Its one-handed opening is simply awesome! I found the jimping on the spine of the blade to be very aggressive. Once you drive your thumb into the jimping, it is locked in. The more thumb pressure I added, the more secure it felt.
Another notable feature, and the reason why this folder is so light in weight is due to its all Zytel handle. I have not experienced any flex while actively using it. It is also important for me to note that I have been able to gauge the tolerance level of the folder and I would not use this knife for heavy duty daily use. Personally, I would feel more confident with a steel liner handle. The jimping inside the index finger area is another nice feature. This area in conjunction with the spine blade jimping, locks the Aegis in your hand securely.
So far, I have not had the opportunity to use the safety switch. I feel that the blade spring provides plenty of closing tension. I am sure that I will eventually find a use for the safety. It will be a valuable feature to employ while running or actively moving.
This is a perfect EDC blade. Great for everyday tasks and the perfect backup tactical combat use folder.
